La prima definizione potrebbe essere quella di un romanzo statico. Un romanzo giocato sulla memoria di personaggi che un destino familiare ha rinserrato in una petrosa rocca cinquecentesca, ultimo feudo di una gente che solo nell'abulia più completa trova la soluzione e forse il freno provvisorio alla propria inarrestabile decadenza. Eppure, questa storia senza storia, possiede in tutto il suo svolgimento una sua logica consequenzialità. Come figure di presepio fermate nel gesto che le fìssa nella loro funzione archelipa. occupano successivamente la scena e il tempo di ogni capitolo il padre Ugo, la madre Emma, il cognato Giulio, la zia Porzia, i famigli della casa e della fattoria. Al centro e pero solo Pietro, il figlio di Ugo ed Emma, ultimo erede del feudo, insieme protagonista e vittima, ma soprattutto perenne interrogativo aperto sulla sua possibilità di uscire dal giardino dei ciliegi sul quale si sta abbattendo la scure della storia.
